The word “in” - frequently used, yet seldom pondered. A preposition when intentionally considered deepens the understanding of the phrase. From a place of understanding, application becomes easier and more impactful.
The main definition of the word “In” includes “being surrounded by limits and boundaries”. To be in something, we must be surrounded by the limits or boundaries of that specific thing. For example, if a person is in the house, they are within the walls or confines of the house. Many of us experienced being in quarantine over the last several months. We were confined to the requirements of the quarantine. Think about several other prepositional phrases: in the car, in trouble, in bed, in debt, in the club, in a good/bad mood, in the know, in style, etc. Another big one, in God we trust. How often do we think about the fact that the word “in” carries with it boundaries and limits?
Our “in” can be due to our own choices or things outside of our control. Regardless of how we arrived at our “in”, we can choose our response. Overspending leads to being in debt, creating financial limitations. Relational decisions allow us to be in a family or friend circle. Pursuing education places us in school. We can be in a season of transition; in a dead-end job; in a fantastic community.
For followers of YAHWEH, this preposition has significant implications! The phrases “in YAHWEH”, “in CHRIST” and ‘in HIM” appear throughout the Bible. These phrases are used more than 150 times in the book of Romans alone!! Applying the definition of the word “in” to these phrases should give us pause.
If I am “In CHRIST”, I am encompassed by the limits and boundaries of HIS character. It is by virtue of HIM. It is for HIS sake. It allows me to be close to HIM. It is not about me! Check out 2 Corinthians 5:17 - Whoever is a believer in Christ is a new creation. The old way of living has disappeared. A new way of living has come into existence. For me to be a new creation, I must be in the boundaries Christ has defined. Applying this concept to each “in” phrase will significantly deepen our understanding of YAHWEH’s Word.
